Have fun and remember,

All that Glitters is not Gold

All the shiny gold-colored material in you gold pan may not be gold. Pyrite, known as "fools gold," has fooled many before you. On close examination, however, pyrite does not really look like gold. Pyrite has a brassy color, is sometimes tarnished, and, because it occurs as crystals, changes shades as you rotate it in the sun. Gold is always gold colored, soft, and malleable or bendable. If you see gold-colored flecks that either float on the water or are so light in weight that they easily wash out of the pan, you probably have small pieces or "books" of mica, a mineral that because it is transparent and heat resistant was once used in doors of stoves so the fire could be seen. Mica has a tendency to break apart into flat sheets. It comes in several colors, and the the gold-colored variety is sometimes mistaken for gold by inexperienced gold panners.

If you are lucky enough to find gold in your pan, it can come in many shapes: small lumps or nuggets, wires, feather-shaped crystals, or flat flecks. Pieces can range in size from almost microscopic "colors" (very small pieces) up to fist-sized nuggets, but your chances of finding the latter are pretty remote. However, gold panners are optimistic, and you never know what the next pan will produce.

Hello to all fellow members,
I have been a member for a few months now but this is me finally getting round to introducing myself.
My name is Tom and I am from Edinburgh in Scotland, I moved to Australia about 32 years ago and that is where I call home.
I am 64 years old but behave a bit like a teenager, I am married and have 2 kids, I will be arriving at Medford in April, I will be naked, of gear that is, so I will have to buy or build a 4inch dredge, also need to buy an inexpensive RV, note everything will have to be inexpensive Scottish remember.
I will arrive in Medford airport and hire a car for 7 days during which time I hope to have acquired transport, I will then travel to Happy Camp to set up Camp and that is where I will put together all my gear.
Thereafter will travel to Oregon for the dredging season I hope to spend about 5 months in Ca /Or.
I am a retired Commercial Diver; the last five years that I was working I had my own business, collecting live corals and marine fish for the Aquarium industry. I miss diving very much so I am very excited at getting back in the water to play.
I have been studying the underwater gravel transfer system with interest and will put my two bobs worth in sometime along the way.
I hope to make some new mates when I arrive and hope someone will adopt me.
I enjoy the forum very much it has been worth its weight in gold to me, boom boom. :?
All the best from Tom in Aussie.
Oh and remember that nothing sucks seeds like a GUMMY budgie!!!

Hey Tom, (US lingo for G-day mate!) Just a reminder that the moratorium on suction dredging in California is still in effect, and you should apply for a 700 permit at least a month before your arrival, if you intend to legally dredge in Oregon.

Along with the Division of State Lands permit. At least that one is a free one. The 700 will run you $25.00 US. Most waters won't open for dredging until June to July due to fish restrictions. The DSL site has a list of waters and dates that you can download and print.

Hello guys,&Gals,
enter thanks to al for good wishes and info.
I have a DSL permit already and the 700p was mailed last week.
I know about the seasonal restictions,I hope to move around the various rivers as the regs will allow as I will be in oregon for 4 to 5 months,I will initially do a bit of sniping and highbanking to stave of the withdrawls from not diving. :D
At present I am negotiating to but a 5"dredge from a guy in Redding,as I will have to pay up front I wondered if any member new this person and perhaps could alay my worries as to their honesty, the sellers name is :

Bright's Redding Trophy

Redding, CA. 96002
Ph. 530 223-3558
Fx. 530 223-6609
I hope I have not broken any forum rules by making this request. :?:
Many thanks . :D
Tom.

Bear in mind, your 700 and DSL permits are a limit of 4 inch intake and 16 HP.
